New Puppy Information
On this page you will find some basic information that we hope will help guide you with the beginning stages of life with a new puppy.
- Initial Vet Visit: We highly recommend that you have your new puppy assessed by a veterinarian soon after bringing them home. Your vet will be able to set up a vaccination schedule based on when your puppies first vaccine was given.
- Vaccines: Likely your new puppy has only had 1 vaccine given at approximately 8 weeks of age. This initial vaccine is not enough to protect them against everything they are possibly going to come in contact with. They are going to need booster vaccines to help strengthen their immune system. You veterinarian will go through a vaccine schedule with you at your first puppy visit.
- Recommendations: Even though it is exciting to bring a new puppy home, we do not recommend bringing your new friend to a dog park or pet store until after they have been to a vet for booster vaccines. They are highly susceptible still to pathogens having only received their first vaccination.
- Fecal: It is commonly recommended that you have a fecal test done on your new puppy at their first vet visit with you. The most common parasite found in young dogs is Giardia. It is often found that stress causes the release of the cysts that are found in the feces.
